Wood Flooring

Solid wood! All wood flooring regardless of width or length, that is one piece of wood from top to bottom is considered solid flooring.

Solid flooring gives you a great opportunity for customization. Your choice of species, stains and finishes all contribute to the personalization of a solid floor. Adding borders, medallions, corner treatments, etc., can further customize a solid wood floor.

In most cases, solid flooring is nailed down to 3/4" exterior grade plywood, and is excellent in most areas of a home on the ground level or above. Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and great rooms are excellent for solid wood flooring.

Job-site or Factory Finished

Do you prefer a finish that is applied on the job-site, or a flooring product that is finished at the factory? Below the differences are discussed.

Job-site Finish: A job-site finish is one that is applied at the place of installation. There are several different types of finishes available and, when you choose a job-site finish, they are probably all available to you. See finishes below. Most (but not all) solid wood flooring products are unfinished, and some laminated/engineered products are available unfinished too.

Choosing the type of finish to applied to your floor on-site gives you the choice of what type of shine you prefer, as well as the effect the color of the product will have on your floor. A wide range of stains are available for use on a floor that will be finished on-site, giving you unlimited possibilities for customizing your floor's color. However, sanding and finishing on-site does create dust and noise from the equipment, and there is a dry time during which you will be unable to use that particular room.

Prefinished: A prefinished floor is one on which the finish is applied at the factory. Most (but not all) laminated products are prefinished, and some solid products are also available prefinished.

Several finish options are available in prefinished products, including ultraviolet cured urethane, water-based urethane, moisture-cured urethane and seal and wax. Contact us regarding which finishes are available on the product of your choice.

Prefinished flooring eliminates the dust and noise factor involved in the job-site finishing process, however, your finish and stain options are more limited.

Choosing a Species

More than 22 domestic and imported wood species are used for wood flooring. The most common of these are Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, Pine and Hickory/Pecan.

Other domestic woods that make beautiful flooring are: Ash, Beech, Birch, Black Cherry, Douglas Fir, Mesquite and Walnut.

If you're looking for something more exotic, some imported woods that are unique are: Brazilian Cherry, Australian Cypress, Jarrah, Mahogany, Merbau, Padauk, Purpleheart, Teak, Wenge, and others.
